After the bulls come the donkeys?

Esel gehören einfach zu Mallorca

How Frank came to paint bulls is a story that has often been told – also here on the blog! The decisive factor was his wife Laura, who wanted a bull picture. Now that so many bull artworks have already been created, Laura has a new wish: she wishes that Frank would draw her a donkey! A great idea, isn’t it?

Donkeys belong to Mallorca like bulls belong to Spain!

Donkeys are an integral part of Mallorca. Everywhere you can see them grazing in pastures or even doing their work in the Tramuntana mountains. And wherever the donkeys appear, everyone is very enthusiastic about these beautiful animals and their funny character! Many of the donkeys are also very people-oriented, love to be petted and enjoy being the center of attention. But the donkeys are not only a popular photo motif on Mallorca and like to be petted, they also have important jobs that they do!

Life without a donkey on Mallorca used to be unthinkable. They were important workers in agriculture, and they were called in again and again for other tasks. There is even a Mallorcan donkey breed, the Ase balear, which is one of the largest breeds. There is even a work of art by Frank Krüger that shows the donkey at work. Today, donkeys are not as widespread as they used to be. Many of their tasks are now performed by machines and the like – but even today it is not entirely possible without them. In the Tramuntana mountains, for example, there are still many donkeys that are used as pack animals. They cope well with the rocky paths and transport a lot up and down the mountains. But in the rest of the island, donkeys are now also being used as animal lawn mowers and “clean” pastures, finca plots and more.

Donkey on the screen?

While bulls are a popular motif for many artists on the island of Mallorca, there are comparatively few dedicated to donkeys. They make a great motif and are always fun to take pictures of, and they are masters of sweet and funny grimaces. It would be really nice if Frank Krüger would fulfill his wife Laura’s wish and paint her a nice donkey, wouldn’t it? There would certainly be more fans of his work who would be happy about it!
