The sculpture “Korf” by Emanuele Giannelli is a profound reflection on human existence and the struggle with existential doubts. The figure depicts a person with crossed arms, wearing virtual reality glasses. Their face is turned upward, as if looking at the sky, yet through the glasses, they see nothing. This tension between reality and illusion is central to Giannelli’s work, inviting the viewer to contemplate the modern human condition.

The crossed arms suggest a protective, perhaps introspective stance, as if the figure is retreating into themselves for shelter from the outside world. The virtual glasses symbolize the influence of technology on our perception and understanding of reality. Though the person appears to gaze at the sky, their direct access to the real world is blocked—a metaphor for the alienation that can result from increasing virtualization and digitalization.

However, Giannelli’s “Korf” also conveys hope. The upward-facing posture of the figure, despite the visual blockade, symbolizes the pursuit of redemption and a chance for renewal. The artist emphasizes that there is always a possibility for liberation from the chains of existential uncertainty. In “Korf,” he sees a metaphor for human potential: the ability to look forward and search for new ways to find meaning and purpose, even in the face of doubt and uncertainty.
