The sea is as smooth as a mirror, the outdoor terraces of the cafés are full and even on the beaches the first ones in swimming trunks and bikinis are working on their summer tan – and all this in January! What sounds bizarre even has its own name: Las Calmas de Enero – the quiet days of January!
Plenty of sun thanks to the Las Calmas de Enero
January is definitely not the most beautiful month in Germany and many other European countries. It’s cold, it’s raining or snowing and the sun rarely comes out. The so-called winter depressions then really hit and everyone longs for spring with sunshine and pleasant temperatures. What few people know: This spring is only about 2 hours away by plane! Because in Mallorca there is a time in January that makes you forget all winter blues!
With temperatures of up to 20°, the almond blossom, plenty of sun and a sea that lies there like a mirror, Mallorca is often a real paradise at the beginning of the year. At this time, when things are still quiet on the island and only a few tourists are on site, everyone is driven outside to enjoy the early (but usually short) spring to the fullest. Frank Krüger and his family also enjoy this time, for example by having breakfast on their south-facing terrace at 9 a.m.
Short break from winter!
This weather phenomenon, known as “Las Calmas de Enero”, does not last long though! While it is already green everywhere and cowslips cover the meadows like a carpet of flowers, the Majorcan winter only rests for a short time. From the usually very cold temperatures at night, you can quickly see that winter is not over yet. And in fact, it usually doesn’t take long before rain and cold, as well as the occasional storm, return and remind you that spring doesn’t start in January on Mallorca either.
However, until the time comes and the temperatures drop again, nobody will be kept indoors. Everyone enjoys the sun and the peace and quiet on the island. In addition to meeting friends in restaurants and cafés, there are also hikes and bike tours on the agenda, and here and there people even go swimming in the sea. The Mallorcans and also all residents and visitors really appreciate these beautiful days at the beginning of the year and are grateful for the extra quality of life that is bestowed on them!
