Even though we have lived in Mallorca for a long time, there are always things that are new to us. Like a day celebrating a bun! It took place in Palma yesterday, January 18, 2023, and attracted many Palmerans and visitors to the island’s bakeries! The Llonguetada celebrates the light bun that is so typical of Palma and ensures, among other things, that the tradition and special baking art is not forgotten!
Llonguets, traditional buns
A day celebrating a bun? That sounds a bit strange at first, but it also shows how important their tradition is to the Mallorcans and how much they appreciate it when it is lived and celebrated today. And the llonguet, a white bun, has been a part of life in the island’s capital for so long that it deserves a lot of attention. Because in between the baked goods, which are made in a special way, were almost forgotten!
The typical llonguet consists of flour, water, olive oil, salt and yeast. Actually nothing extraordinary. However, the secret lies in the preparation, more precisely in the production and fermentation of the dough. And only if these special features are taken into account is it really a typical Llonguet, as people know and love it in Palma!
Llonguetada – a festival of buns
As already mentioned, the llonguet was almost forgotten until a group of young people got together and, as the “Orgull Llonguet” initiative, has been making sure that the bun is on everyone’s lips again in Palma for several years. As part of the celebrations surrounding San Sebastià, this pastry is also honored by dedicating a special celebration to it. And so the production of the llonguets ran at full speed yesterday in some bakeries in the island’s capital, so that they can be offered cold or warm topped for the festival in the evening. Of course, the llonguet with sobrasada as a topping is particularly popular, but the version with ham and cheese is also very popular.
Of course, a llonguet can also be bought outside of the festivities in many bakeries! So it’s worth keeping your eyes peeled!
