Just a few weeks ago the beaches were well frequented and everyone was enjoying the beautiful sun and a swim in the pleasantly warm Mediterranean Sea! Now the sea is rough, the waves lash up and the storm brings cold air that makes us all shiver. In addition, there are rain, thunderstorms and sometimes heavy hail showers. Hard to imagine for many summer vacationers. But that is Mallorca too. Autumn always has a few surprises in store here!
Storm is part of autumn!
In the last few weeks there have been many inquiries on Facebook as to whether a visit to Mallorca in November is worthwhile. Generally nothing speaks against it! Mallorca often impresses with sunshine and mild temperatures in the autumn and winter months. But there is no guarantee for that, because here on the sunny island there are not quite such nice days either. You always have to expect bad weather in November. But that shouldn’t prevent you from visiting the island. Because after the storm the sun always rises!
Those who are currently visiting the island are really unlucky with the weather conditions! Last week, a heavy hail shower surprised Cala Ratjada. Within a very short time it looked like it had snowed in the popular holiday destination. Towards the weekend the really stormy days began, with wind speeds of almost 100 km / h at the lighthouse of Capdepera and waves that sometimes hit up to 14 meters! A walk on the coast could be life-threatening and if you didn’t have to go outside, you could make yourself comfortable at home. In the course of this week, the weather didn’t really get much nicer – but you always have to expect that in November!
Serious damage that makes restoration necessary
Anyone who has been coming to Mallorca for a long time knows how much damage the violent storms in autumn and winter can cause. Boats that are washed up on the beach or the coast are not uncommon. Garden inventory flying through the gardens is also a well-known sight in autumn. That is why residents secure their belongings on the property whenever there is a storm warning. The tremendous power of water can cause completely different dimensions! It wasn’t long ago, for example, that the path to Cala Gat in Cala Ratjada had to be renewed because large parts of it collapsed during a storm. The harbor wall of Cala Ratjada also worries many! Over the years, spray and waves have caused a lot of damage and the fear that they will eventually no longer be able to withstand the forces of the sea is always present.
Even now there was a lot of damage during the storm, even if it was not quite as bad as in a few other years. The Galeria Frank Krüger in Cala Ratjada was already affected and the outdoor advertising could not withstand the storm. Since the storm season has only just begun, we all hope that the damage will not be even worse and that Mallorca will shine again for the holidaymakers at the beginning of the new season next year and show itself from its most beautiful side – without damage and maybe ongoing restoration work!
