The painting TORERO IN NEW YORK CITY is the first surrealist artwork that Frank Krüger ever painted. With this picture the artist expresses his critical attitude towards bullfighting. It also shows the relationship between his dream city New York and his adopted home Spain.
TORERO IN NEW YORK CITY
The torero stands on 30th Street and looks towards 5th Avenue. He tries to face the incoming traffic. But it is quite clear that the bullfighter has no chance against the cars and cannot win. This is how the artist draws attention to the situation in bullfighting. In bullfighting, victory and defeat are already decided before the fight even starts.
Messages in the artwork
Frank also uses this artwork to draw attention to general grievances in the world. For example, there is a graffiti on the wall in the upper right corner with the words “save the whales”. Or a sign with the Hebrew inscription “Peace without ceasing”.
There are other hidden messages in the picture like in Hindu, Hebrew or English. Frank is expressing that an international and inter-ethnic coexistence is taking place in New York. It’s a beautiful, peaceful multicultural community. In the end, everyone speaks the same language when it comes to peace and justice.
Of course, the artist has not forgotten the language of love in his painting. Chinese characters can be seen on a sign. These are translated as “Laura I love you”. In addition, the date on which Frank and his wife Laura spent their first day in New York is also noted.
The original has already been sold, but you still have the possibility to purchase an art print of the painting!
