Does love need a special day to be celebrated? This question often comes up just before Valentine’s Day and is currently the subject of heated debate on social media channels. Looking at the discussions, we can’t get enough reminders to celebrate love! So why not celebrate Valentine’s Day too?
Valentin, a fighter for love!
Love seems to have always been a point that not everyone has given the same importance. The priest Valentin also had to experience this in Rome in the third century. He was a true romantic and believed in love. So much so that, contrary to the prohibition of Emperor Claudius II, he married loving couples together. And if the legend is to be believed, then the couples who entered into the sacred state of marriage through the priest Valentin were particularly happy. Some rumored that the flowers from his own garden that Valentin gave to the wedding couples were magical and brought good luck.
The priest Valentin even went so far with his belief in love that he even married Christian soldiers. This was strictly forbidden by Emperor Claudius II and he gave the order to execute the priest. So the priest himself could not experience a happy ending – but his fight for love brought him at least the late honor of being celebrated as the patron saint of lovers in the Middle Ages. By the way, February 14 was the date on which he was executed. When we celebrate Valentine’s Day, we also say “thank you” in a certain way for the commitment of the priest Valentine, which he paid for with his life!
