While we were recently happy about the very mild temperatures and many hours of sunshine in December and the first half of January, winter has now arrived on Mallorca and is freezing us with storms, rain, hail and even snow! But of course we still love our island and just enjoy a nice open fire at home instead of sunshine in the café!
Winter in Mallorca with lots of snow
Even if Mallorca is known as a sunny island and is often used for wintering because of the relatively mild temperatures, there are also really cold and uncomfortable days here, which are often accompanied by storms, rain and hail. At that point at the latest you will be happy if you have good heating or a fireplace to provide cozy warmth at home. This is also the case at the moment, with a lot of snow being reported in some places!
In the night from Sunday to Monday, not only did some places report minus temperatures, but it even snowed more than it had in five years. In Fornalutx, for example, there was 7 centimeters of fresh snow at the start of the week. And some other places also reported heavy snowfall, which closed roads. Many snow pictures could be seen on Facebook and also in the local newspapers and many people were happy about possible snowball fights and winter walks!
What’s next for the winter weather?
Snowfall shouldn’t be expected for the next few days, and there are even reports of an increase in temperatures for next week. But the values from December will probably not go back anytime soon. If you want to visit the island when the almond blossoms are in bloom, you should definitely have a thick jacket and a scarf with you and make sure that the accommodation you choose also has a heating option.
If you are prepared for the cooler temperatures, you can still have a great time on the island and go for beautiful walks. And if it rains or gets too stormy, there are also plenty of great cafes to have a good time in – or browse the island’s shops, galleries and museums. There is definitely no boredom!
